Copy and Paste
Copying
A copy puts three versions of the selection on the clipboard:
- Plain text — readable text. Table selections become tab-separated values.
- HTML — for pasting into mail, word processors and web apps.
- Typora's own format — so pasting back into Typora keeps the exact Markdown, list nesting, table structure, code languages, and the reference links and footnotes the selection depends on.
Other ways to copy, from the Edit menu or the context menu:
| Command | Clipboard gets |
|---|---|
| Copy as Markdown | The Markdown source only |
| Copy as HTML Code | The HTML source as text |
| Copy as Plain Text | Plain text only |
| Copy without Theme Styling | HTML without your theme's styles |
| Copy Image Content | The image itself, with the caret on an image |
Settings ▸ Control ▸ Copy & Paste:
- Copy Markdown by Default — the plain-text version is the Markdown source instead of readable text.
- Line-wise Copy and Cut — with nothing selected, copy or cut takes the whole line.
The Copy button on a code block copies the whole block. Pasted into an empty paragraph it becomes a code block again; pasted into another code block it inserts only the code.
Pasting
Typora picks the richest format it understands: its own format first, then HTML (converted to Markdown — headings, lists, tasks, code with language, links, images, tables), then plain text.
- Paste as Plain Text ignores formatting and doesn't interpret Markdown or tab-separated values. Markdown characters are escaped so they stay literal.
- Relative image and link paths are adjusted to the document you paste into.
- Each paste is one undo step.
Tables
| You copy | You paste into | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Text | A cell | Inserted into that cell |
| A block of cells | A cell or a cell selection | Overwrites cells starting at the top-left; the table grows if needed |
| Whole rows | A cell | Inserted above that row |
| Whole columns | A cell | Inserted before that column |
| Rows or columns | The same kind of selection | Replaces the selected rows or columns |
| A table or cells | Outside a table | A new table |
- A single cell fills every selected cell.
- Data is never clipped or repeated to fit; the written cells are selected afterwards.
- Tables from spreadsheets (tab-separated), HTML tables (merged cells are expanded) and Markdown tables are all recognised.
